A hydraulic dynamometer is a device used to measure the power output of engines motors or other rotating machines It works on the principle of absorbing mechanical energy and converting it into heat through fluid resistance usually water or oil The system consists of a rotor connected to the engine under test and a stator fixed to the housing As the rotor turns in the fluid it creates resistance which is controlled by adjusting the flow of the fluid The braking force produced is measured to calculate torque and speed which are then used to determine power output Hydraulic dynamometers are commonly used for testing automotive engines industrial motors and agricultural equipment because they provide smooth load control and can handle high power levels
